It was a picture perfect morning for the Carlton County Breakfast on the Farm at Laveau Grandview Dairy in Wrenshall, MN.
Thank you to the Laveau family, Minnesota Farmers Union and all of the volunteers who worked so very hard to make this happen. An estimated 1000 people gathered to learn about farming, meet dairy princesses and catch up with neighbors and friends. The breakfast was tasty and I really enjoyed the self guided tour of the dairy barn which reminded me of my childhood visits to my relatives' farm in rural Harris. It was fun to see there are still barn cats, the new milkers are still given names and things run smoothly on a well run and maintained farm. Dairy farming is one of the toughest jobs there is. Today it takes brains, braun and fortitude to operate a family farm. Several people mentioned they were also going to make hay before Sunday's predicted rain. I hope they manage to beat the clock and put up every bail before the first rain drop hits. The next time you open a carton of milk, slice into a stick of butter or put a slice of cheese on that hamburger...think about the families who dedicate their lives to make sure we enjoy clean, safe and locally produced products for our table.
