History was made Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet, Minnesota as state and FDL dignitaries, community members, staff and students gathered to witness the presentation ceremony of President Stephanie Hammitt, as the first female president of the college. Prior to construction of the present day campus classrooms and business offices were set up at the Garfield Building in Cloquet. It seems as if it were just yesterday that I attended a communications class at Garfield--but in reality that was over 30 years ago. What a difference a few decades can make! Every time I visit FDLTCC I think about those beginning days, the dedication of tribal leaders to provide higher education for their band members and the community...and their unique partnership with the state of Minnesota. I look forward to seeing what the future will bring for students, staff and our community under President Hammitt’s thoughtful guidance and steady hand. Interesting fact, FDLTCC is one of only 105 land grant colleges and universities in the United States. Land grant institutions follow a mandate to provide openness, accessibility, and service to people. To read about the history of FDLTCC check out their website.
