Today the world watched the shameful performance of Donald Trump as he and Vladimir Putin rejected the findings of our Department of Justice and 17 intelligence agencies concerning Russia’s hacking of our 2016 election process. Rather than defend our country, our president shockingly supported the interests of another country over those of the United States.
Donald Trump took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. We simply cannot have our president allow foreign interference in our democracy. Today, even conservative Republicans – and Fox News – are criticizing Mr. Trump calling today’s summit “disgusting” and “one of the most disgraceful performances ever by an American president.”
Former CIA Director John Brennan went even further, stating that Mr. Trump’s performance “rises to & exceeds the threshold of high crimes & misdemeanors. It was nothing short of treasonous. Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin.”
Even the daughter of Jon Huntsman, U.S. Ambassador to Russia criticized Mr. Trump, saying that he has “thrown his own people and country under the bus.”
Today, in a moment of truth, our president chose to tell the world he believes Vladimir Putin. Republicans are right to criticize his actions. As of this writing, we have not heard from Pete Stauber, my Republican opponent. Today, there are 29 days until the August 14 primary election. I promise you I’ll continue to challenge Mr. Stauber’s support of our president and his actions that would do even more harm to our country.
