FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Michelle Lee Accepts DFCW Endorsement- Organization Acknowledges Lee’s Leadership
Michelle Lee, a leading candidate to replace Rick Nolan in the U.S. Congress, today proudly accepted the endorsement of Duluth for Clean Water (DFCW) and its hundreds of members across Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District.
In announcing its endorsement, DFCW noted Lee’s early stance in opposition to the proposed Glencore/PolyMet sulfide mining project in northeast Minnesota and the threat it poses to communities in the Lake Superior watershed. In its endorsement, the organization stated: “We urge anyone who cares about clean water in Minnesota to realize the absolute urgency of this issue, and to join us in supporting Michelle Lee’s commitment to protecting our most valuable natural resource.”
The organization also stated that its endorsement recognizes Lee’s leadership in bringing voices together to protect all Minnesotans. “Michelle Lee is a fighter and will stand up to foreign mining corporations as she stands up for Minnesota’s future.”
Here’s the full text of Michelle Lee’s response to the DFCW endorsement:
It’s a great honor to be recognized by the members and leaders of Duluth for Clean Water and I proudly accept their endorsement.
Since the first day of my campaign I’ve stated that we should be pursuing economic development that will work in tandem with the current mining industry to shore up our local tax base and create good paying, sustainable jobs. However, in a world where there are multiple warnings of an impending fresh water shortage, we must recognize that our future depends on our fresh water. Water is life.
These are challenging times for the environment and those who seek to protect it. The Trump administration has targeted hundreds of environmental rules it sees as a burden to the fossil fuel industry and has already rolled back dozens of standards aimed at fighting climate change. According to health experts, the Trump administration actions could lead to 80,000 or more unnecessary deaths each decade and cause health problems for more than one million Americans.
This administration has already revoked a rule that prevents mining companies from dumping mining debris into local waterways and is in the process of suspending a rule known as Waters of the United States that protects tributaries and wetlands under the Clean Water Act.
Quite simply, we cannot trust Donald Trump, his Environmental Protection Agency and the Republican Party to protect our natural resources and environment from decades-long damage they seek to inflict under their policies. This is not leadership. This is an all-out assault on our future.
My Republican opponent has made it clear he supports sulfide mining by multi-national corporations in the water-rich environment of northeast Minnesota. He’s wrong on this just as he’s wrong on most of the issues that seek to better the lives of people and businesses within our District. I look forward to challenging him to explain why he refuses to listen to the majority of residents who oppose his positions on the critical issues that will move us forward together to an even better America.
